Entry #6: Verizon Wishes

How many of you guys want a new phone? I know I do, and it’s a good thing I have Verizon! In Verizon’s new commercial, Wishes, they’re trying to influence viewer’s to transfer to their company by using humor to communicate their outstanding offers and deals.

To begin, the commercial starts with an anxious father stealing his daughter’s birthday wish. How rude, but kind of funny because it’s something my dad would do. His wish was for a new iPhone 15 Pro. Then, Jason Bateman, the Verizon guy, pulls him aside to explain what Verizon has to offer. Knowing that the father has a busted up phone, Jason explains that Verizon takes any type of beat up phone and exchanges it for an iPhone 15 Pro. But, wait. Where’s the funny part? The funny part is when Jason begins saying, “Instead of stealing birthday wishes…” This is funny, because we were all thinking about the fact he did that to his own daughter!

To continue, the father then sits down saying, “Now I don’t have to ruin any birthdays,” while trying to steal cake and a birthday hat. This part is numerous, because it’s ironic. He’s saying he’s not going to ruin anymore, but he already did, he’s taking cake, and leaving his daughter’s party just to get a new phone. Another amusing comment made by Jason was, “that shipped already sailed.” We were all thinking the same thing. Finally, the last bit of humor added was when the father was trying to take a picture with Jason on his new phone. The daughter’s probably thinking, “Are you happy now, Dad.”

In conclusion, Verizon was able to combine humor and their deals to make an awesome persuasive advertisement. Did you guys think it was funny? Do you guys have Verizon, and if not, would you consider switching to them after watching this?

  1. Kathryn,

Great use of transitions, you've organized this well. I love the little personal anecdote about how your dad would totally steal your wish too, it's a nice touch. You've got a typo with numerous, I'm assuming you wanted humorous there, but overall excellent show don't tell examples. This is a fun blogpost overall and shows you've got some excellent essay writing skills, it's very well organized.
